Vormsel 2.0

2023

clay, textile

+/- 40 x 30 x 200 cm.
(to the ground)

A statue of Mary once stood in the niche. The void is carefully copied into a object/volume in smaller scale, and placed in the space. The blue of the ‘heavenly’ ceiling communicates with back in the bleu dripper touching the ground, connecting heaven with earth, the spiritual with the physical, ready to take on a new form.

The church has, both in the past and present, shaped people in their actions. What appeals to me is the rigid structure of such an institution; the buildings still make an impression (although they sometimes lose out to today’s skyscrapers and prestigious projects). On the other hand, church doctrine must keep pace with present times. Church as a “mold” for human existence is less stable then before. As times are changing, so should the church and it’s ideas change along in order to matter and connect with modern society. The titel ‘Vormsel 2.0’ can be translated both as ‘Confirmation 2.0’ or as ‘That what is formed 2.0’.  ‘Confirmation’ becomes something that no longer has a fixed form, but is given the opportunity to adapt/reshape itself. It changes with the times.
