Kantelpunt

2022

blown glass, wood, textile, metal

+/- 180 x 70 x 70 cm

The towers in ‘Kantelpunt’ are shaped by blowing glass in molds. These molds had rectangular lines and straight corners. The glass however, when blown in the molds, will never copy this strickt visual language. Everything becomes rounder, friendlier, perhaps even more human? Straight lines, dictated by molds, stand little chance.

An architectural form lies on its side, toppled, a street plan dragged along with it like the roots of a tree. Tilted, it reveals an organic innerworld, a softer place, where we might find ourselves better or more comfortable than the businesslike and restrained exterior of many architectural masterpieces. The sculpture is presented as where it a device, turned towards the viewer. The work becomes an instrument, a tool, offering the viewer an escape from a formal cityscape, into a dreamy landscape.
