Bricks are turned into walls, of safety or separation. Bricks are turned into streets, that connect us or separate us from the soil beneath us. ‘Back to Sand’ is an attempt to ‘take on the brick’ and create a counter movement. A shape that celebrates a reconnection with the earth, with the very foundation of things.
The negative form of bricks is found by pressing clay against the inside of a hollow construction of stacked bricks, thus using the pile of bricks as a mold. After carefully removing the bricks, the empty space (negative) is turned into a volume. The cay form itself is hollow too, allowing another shape to escape outwards. This textile dripper eventually finds its way, as if it is fluid, to the ground. Back to a form that is mouldable. Back to sand.
